so guess what?

Remember this picture?

This is the picture we posted to announce that after bringing home our two little China princes...just a short six months later Anastasia was going to have baby boy number 5...and sure enough...precious, funny, sweet Patrick was born!

Snuggling with Kiki last week. :)

Well...take a look at that picture again....

I'll give you the link to Anastasia's blog in a minute to read more of the story from her perspective, but yes, their family is growing by two more BOYS!!

YES. that will make a total of SEVEN. BOYS.

Are they crazy?  Maybe! lol  But when God says go, who are we to say no??

Over Christmas they hosted a 16 year old named Kolya from the Ukraine through an awesome organization called Project143 and long story short, are in a race to adopt him and his 7 year old little brother Vova before Kolya ages out of the orphanage this summer.

This is a step of faith, as all adoptions are.  You can imagine the thought of the cost of two adoptions...after doing just that less than two years ago, plus multiple surgeries, specialist appointments, etc. in between!  But we know and have witnessed many times before how God has provided every penny needed to bring just one of his children home to their forever families...and we believe He will do just that once again!

They have started a fund raising page that you can go to and read more about the story here:

(You'll also get a glimpse of sweet Kolya...and you can be sure I will post a picture of Vova as soon as we are allowed...for now just know that he is adorable and my heart just melted when I saw him!)

This is the link to Anastasia's blog if you'd like to follow the story there:

We'll keep you updated!

a new year

Hello!  Happy New Year! I'm excited to be at the beginning of a new year.  Last year was hard in some ways and wonderful in others.  I'm excited to see what new adventures this new year will bring!   To start with, here are two exciting events from this year already!

Mr. Happy turned 8!

I have gotten to see me three kiddos quite a bit recently and I am so thankful for the time I've gotten to spend with them!  They are such a joy to be around!  Sadly, Little Miss Giggles was in the hospital for a couple days, which is why I got to have Little Miss Sunshine and Mr. Happy stay at my house, but LMG is fine and back to her happy, silly self, thank the Lord! :)

The other fun thing that happened the other day is this popped up on facebook! This music video was done by the band the Monday Movement, which is a group of high schoolers.  It is so well done - the music and the video!  Why is this so important?  Well...if you watch closely you may recognize one scene in it...(*hint*...my header picture)...and the guy in it just so happens to be my best friend (and the history teacher of those in the band!).  :)  I've known for a long time that Michael is a great actor (and dude, he can sing!!)...I'm just excited to get to share him with the world now! :)  So watch and enjoy!

three decades?!

Today is Little Miss Giggles tenth birthday.  She is a whole decade old.   Amazing.  (See the post just below this to see how much she's grown!)
This month also marks another pretty amazing "anniversary" of sorts.  I have officially known my best friend for three decades.  Thirty years!  That is a long. time.!!  Not often do you know someone for that long much less stay as close as we are!
I am not a huge "anniversary" person - but thirty years is a big deal.  So I told Michael I wanted to do something fun to celebrate - but something we both would enjoy doing.   So today we headed to Oak Ridge where we grew up and had a great afternoon driving around seeing familiar places....

Starting with lunch at Bid Ed's Pizza.
Yum.
Big Ed's is just an OR tradition.
If you've never been there, I'll be happy to take you sometime!

That's Big Ed right there.  He used to always be there in a white tshirt sometimes with a white apron hanging around his neck.

The highschool....where neither of us went to school haha.

The library...where we both definitely went often.

This is where the church met where our families first met when I was three and he was six!

Robertsville Middle School where he went for the first six weeks before being homeschooled...also my first year of homeschooling but I was in third grade.

When we were little, there was a little grocery store here called Bruners.  And to the right kind of back behind that tree was a restaurant called Eddie's Malt Shop that's not there anymore but oh was it awesome!  Lots of good memories from there.

Such a familiar sight turning into our neighborhood off the turnpike!

Finally up to our street where we parked and got out and walked around past familiar houses....

Our neighborhood had lots of kids.  This is where Mandy and Monica lived.

My brother's friend Jennifer's house
Someone decided to get creative with the mailbox lol.

Billy, Jennifer, and Ellie lived here first.  Then Jack and Anna and Sarah.

The crazy dog lady lived here. Er. I mean.  Eh...yeah, that's about right.  lol
"You are behaving worse than a child!!"
Seriously. Words we heard her say to her dogs.

His house. Floods of memories.

 And diagonally across...my house.
Minus all the beautiful trees that used to be in the front yard.

Those flower beds are new.  And that's my old bedroom on the front corner there.

My dad built the deck on the back.  Someone else apparently added a screened in porch to it.

This is a very familiar sight to me.  :)  Except we didn't used to have cell phones in our hands.
We did used to stand in the middle of the street all the time and talk for hours.  (It wasn't a very busy street.)

Selfie standing in our "spot" in the street.  :)  Best friends for 30 years.  Good grief.
And really, I should clarify. I would stand in the middle of the street...he would walk in big circles around me lol.

This was one of my favorite things to do - lie on my bed and look up out the window at the sky through the leaves on the trees.  I love TN.   :)

We used to think it was amusing to drive out past our neighborhood to the "rich neighborhood" and check out all the big houses - this one in particular - at night you can see that it has stairs going up and then splitting to the right and left in that big window above the front door.  :)

I'll say it again:  I love TN!

Across from our neighborhood was a sportsmans club where there was archery and skeetshooting etc.  I grew up with the sounds of guns going off all the time - and still barely even notice the sound it's so familiar ha.  This is a pond that Michael and his brother used to go fishing at a lot.

"Kathryn, take the picture quick as I drive by!  It says no "stoping"!!"  lol  No stoping.  ok.

Our elementary school!
Where we had the same kindergarten teacher a couple years apart. Took bus #7 in the mornings and #18 in the afternoons. Which is just one of many little details that he remembered during our day yesterday.

Yep.  Looks the same.  We went up and peeked in the doors. It even smells familiar.

I remember swinging on those swings.

Children's museum.  I think we both took classes here at different times.  There's so much more to it now.  The one thing that I always remembered was right when you go inside there was a huuge stuffed (real) polar bear. I'm talking it was enormous! It felt like I had to look up a mile to see it's head.  A couple years ago I took my kids for the first time in years and on the way I thought about that bear and how if it was still there, I was sure it was going to seem so much smaller now that I am an adult...and then to my surprise and happiness - it was just as huge and tall as I remembered it being!  I'm glad some things don't change.  :)

We drove around to a few more places that I didn't get pictures of and then stopped in front of the science museum where there were some picnic tables.  I hadn't told him what I'd brought for us to do lol but I knew he'd go along with it just cuz.  When we were little, we sometimes sat underneath our old deck where there were lots of rocks and we would paint them, with the goal of selling them like a lemonade stand, planning to make big bucks.  Although we never actually did anything with them.  lol  But I remember painting them.  Although he says we mostly just dumped the tempera paint powder on them. lol
So I brought rocks to paint.  Just for the heck of it.  Kinda fun just sitting there outside painting rocks and talking about old stuff....who our teachers were...did we eat lunch at school or take it...etc.

My "souvenir" for the day...those are our thumb prints on the back.  :)

Thanks for taking the time to take a drive across town and into our past today M! I am thankful for the past 30 years and everything we have been through together...and that we are still good friends.
P13 as always. :)

a decade?!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY LITTLE MISS GIGGLES!!!

partnering with ShowHope to care for the orphan

I have the privilege of partnering with ShowHope and once a month blogging about a different aspect of adoption and the orphan.  It actually started last month but somehow August got away from me so I am combining August and September's topics.

August's questions was "Why do orphans need families?"  This seems like a silly question...because why wouldn't an orphan need a family?!  A family gives you a sense of belonging.  It gives you an identity and helps define who you are.  Sometimes orphans are listed on "waiting child" websites - and a lot of times they are listed as a number...with some of the details of their specific health or developmental challenges.  But that is far from who they are!

Take my precious godson, Eli, for example.  He could be floating through the foster care system as Eli, a three year old boy with SPD (sensory processing disorder).  But this is not Eli summed up!  Because God called his family to adopt him, he is not just Eli.  He is Eli Beck.  He has a first and a last name - he belongs to the Beck family.  Yes, he does have SPD, but that is not what defines him - he is so much more than that - he is a son, a brother, yes, a godson :).  He is all boy and is full of energy.  He loves spiderman.  And spending the night at Kiki's house (my house). But as much as he loves being with me once in a while, he always wants to talk through what's going to happen - making sure the end is always "and then go home to mama's house?"  And I am always happy to reassure him - yes buddy, and then you will go back home to mama's house.  Which is always followed by a happy "yay!"  He has hard days sometimes, but he has a family who walks with him through those hard days helping him learn that he is capable of anything and there is no label that will hold him back from becoming the person God has created him to be.  He is not alone.  No matter what happens in his life, at the end of the day he can know that he will ALWAYS be able to fall into the arms of his family and know that he is loved and that they have his back no matter what.

Just like my Eli needed a family...I needed one too.  An earthly family, yes, because I too am adopted.  But even more than that, a heavenly family.  I belong to my earthly family...but I also belong to God's family because He has adopted me as His daughter!  Yes, I am a Hallquist, but I am more importantly a child of the King - He ultimately defines who I am.  No matter what happens in my life, no matter if I lose all my friends, no matter how badly I screw up, I can always have the guarantee that at the end of the day I can fall into the arms of my Jesus and He will be there to remind me that I am His. That I belong in His family.  That I am loved. And that He has my back no matter what.  :)

We all need a place where we belong.
A family is just that.

Why do you care for orphans?

Oh my.  How do I answer this?  Because I have to.  Because I am commanded to.  Because it is not an option.  And because there are more than 147 million orphans in the world who have no voice for themselves and need someone to be that voice.  Because if I don't, who will?

One of my recent favorite songs is by Matthew West and is called Do Something.  This song leaves me itchy.  The entire song is awesome, but I will just put the chorus and one verse here for you to read:

I’m so tired of talking
About how we are God’s hands and feet
But it’s easier to say than to be
Live like angels of apathy who tell ourselves
It’s alright, “somebody else will do something”
Well, I don’t know about you
But I’m sick and tired of life with no desire
I don’t want a flame, I want a fire
I wanna be the one who stands up and says,
“I’m gonna do something”

If not us, then who
If not me and you
Right now, it’s time for us to do something
If not now, then when
Will we see an end
To all this pain
It’s not enough to do nothing
It’s time for us to do something

This is why.  Because we ask all the time why God isn't doing anything to fix the problems we see all around us - but the answer is staring back at us in the mirror - He did do something - He made us!  We are to be His hands and feet.  Not "them"...whoever "they" are.  Us!  You and me!  Right now!  In all our busy.  In all the things on our to do list.  In the middle of all that, it is also our job to advocate for the orphan.  To be a voice for them.  To remind our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ that we are commanded to care for them.  And no, this doesn't always look like adoption.  But soo soooo many more of us could adopt if we would simply put away the American lie that our lives are supposed to be easy and that our children are suppose to have their own rooms and we're supposed to have the newest cars/houses/technology etc.

But I suppose that's getting a little off topic.  :}  Why do I care for orphans?  Because behind the word "orphan" there are faces...and those sweet faces are much more than that.  They are souls with names...boys and girls who long to belong and to be known and to be squeezed tight and be told "I love you" and know what the word "forever" means...and to know and believe that that word applies to them.  And when I think about them, I can't keep quiet.  I must speak about them and for them.  In the  hopes that I can help just one more child find their forever family.  And after that, maybe just one more.

partial year recap :)

This year has been full of all kinds of stuff.  Most of it I have been recording on Instagram - it's so quick  and simple. If you'd like to follow me on there my name is skitkat19.  Here is a snippet of what has been going on...

I said goodbye to my sweet Superman.  I still miss him all the time!

Then, for a couple weeks, I got to fill in as nanny for this sweet delicious baby.
He was a bit colicky due to a milk allergy and his mom had been holding him ALL. DAY. LONG. Seriously. Like 16 hours one day because he would just scream when she put him down.  So we fixed that right away and got him on a good routine - eat, play, sleep.  It was neat to be able to work with his parents and together come up with a routine that worked for them and him.  He was doing great when I left and hopefully his full time nanny is having as much fun with him as I did.  :)
Oh, and I should mention that he's adopted!  And my friend was his parents' lawyer!  Ever need an adoption lawyer, I know the best one out there! :)

In February I went to this wedding of two of my favorite people ever, my cousin Ben and his new bride Karen (and that's my "little" bro on the other side).

I absolutely love it when our extended family is together! And I'm so happy Karen is part of that now. :)

A few weeks later, these two hot chickas came to spend a weekend with me and help me plan a design for my craft room.

This is what the room looked like at the beginning...a LOT of white!

Aaand more white!  And I hated those little bumpy things at the tops of the bookshelves.  They used to be display cases at a store and I got them for cheap when they were getting rid of them.

So after a few runs to the store and a little hard (but fun!) work...

Tada!! Chalkboard door!  And my pretty banner from Rebekah.

And pretty bookshelves with little chalkboards on top!!

Much more to come...as God provides the funds....  :)

Got in some spend-the-night time with my godson.  Who is crazy cute.  And likes lemons.  But told me "It's 'picey, kiki!"

Had the privilege of being the photographer for this "secret" wedding.  :)

Little Lion turned three...and had his first birthday at home with his forever family! Yay!  :)
He still talks about how he sat up in the tree one day...  :)

Worked on learning colors with these four munchkinz.

Hung out with these three cuties (but NOT often enough!!!)

He's such a goofball!  :D
I miss his hugs.

Seriously. I haven't seen them since April.  I'm going through serious withdrawals.

Felt very old when I got these two in the mail...

...on the same day!!

Took a road trip with the one in the pink to see the one in the stripes.  Actually that was a detour on the way to...

See a very special production of Anne of Green Gables with a surprise at the end that left Abby sobbing happy tears!
(That's the surprise right there...Aunt K...all the way from VA just for the show.)
And yes...that is a bouquet of carrots. If you have read or seen AOGG, you'll know the reference.
If you haven't...go read it.  Or at least watch it!

I could not have been more proud of her!  And just a couple weeks ago she moved into her dorm room at

college - the same one I went to!   :)

Next, this Little monkey

had his birthday too and also turned three! :)  (The picture on the top left is the first picture we ever saw of him...how could you not just fall in love??)

Next my newest almost-niece was born!
Yum.

And this handsome Lion had surgery again.

And then all the families from our China trip last summer gathered for a weekend in Pigeon Forge near by and came to the boys' house for a cookout one Saturday evening!!  I can't tell you just how good it felt to be together again...with people who just "get" it. Get the adoption thing...get the worrying and wondering and desiring that their child reach his or her potential to the fullest.  Going through surgery...and recovery afterwards.  Get the emotional stress and joy of blending a new child into your family.  Get what a privilege it is to have God call you to bring home one of His orphans and make them an orphan no more.  Get that even though I'm not the momma, I "get" all this too and am so thankful to be a part of this awesome group of families!  Wish we all lived closer and could "do life" together.  But I will have to be satisfied to keep in touch on fbook.  :)

Camp this year was very different...but actually turned out to be one of my favorite years yet.  I had no little kids to do "Kathryn Kamp" with so instead I helped out around "big camp" where ever I was needed and also got in some good hang out time with these awesome girlies.  Oh my how I love each of them!

This dude left us hanging at camp without our game guy and headed to China himself for five weeks!  I can't tell you how badly I wanted to be going with him!!  He fell in love with the country just like I did (although his experience was vastly different than mine...he went to teach English) and didn't want to come home.  We got to Facetime with him one morning during camp and that was fun.

Celebrated the best friend's birthday with a girls' night out to the Cheesecake Factory...YUM!

Said goodbye to our sweet fuzzy cat of 21 years. It was time. RIP Boswell.

And most recently, I helped my good friend Laura set up and open her own bridal shop!!  We stayed up until 3am working on these drapey things and I had a total blast!  I will admit that by about 2:15am I was sprawled on the little couch watching her up on the ladder and saying, "Yup, that looks straight. Wait...move it to the right just a tiny bit...there! Perfect!"
Be sure to check out her website and see what she's all about.  And if you know a bride looking for her very own custom dress, send her Laura's way!

And now you are pretty caught up with my year thus far!  Hopefully I will be back on soon for a very special post or two.  :)

Hope you're enjoying this year and that it is going well for you!!
